Welcome to My New blog

Hi people,

It has taken me a few days to get things set up, but I am now connected with my new blog. It’s not that Blogspot was bad as much as I was simply bored and wanted to learn Wordpress (it is a lot more HTML intensive than I expected.) While it is certainly more complicated, in the end I think it is more content friendly. I also like the set-up and the customization capabilities with added plug-ins. If you have any suggestions on layout or design please let me know.

With the slowing down of the economy, my work schedule has taken a swift dive into a dark cave (winter sleep.) Hopefully the slowdown is only temporary, so I can continue to purchase my essentials: glossy magazines at coffee shops with latés and the occasional bran muffin. In the meantime, I am working on several story ideas. My ideas range from serious, mind inspiring, and passion driven to general, money making ventures. Without going into too much detail and based on theme, and theme alone, my projects traverse travel, micro-lending and forestry, immigration, psychology and joblessness, as well as teenage issues. Broad I know, but that’s it for now.

I am hoping these develop into something productive, meaningful, and possibly (fingers crossed) publishable. If nothing else, I will be satisfied if they keep me busy and inspired while the rest of this industry dies. If not, I’m thinking grad school or Spain as the next destination…maybe.

Here are some photos from a recent concert shoot. The Early Republic. I remember thinking how terrible that band name is. After searching for their names online I came to learn that the Early Republic could be the period of time between George Washington’s inauguration (1789) and the Declaration of the Monroe Doctrine (1823). I’ve always wanted to read more about the the beginnings of this country. Maybe now I will. I still think it is a terrible band name, but I did enjoy the music.

Fog v.2

I had another day of weather to go shoot in. It wasn’t as thick as last week and there was much higher humidity. Still…I got a few. Any favorites?

Fog

I finally saw some weather in North Texas the other day. It is usually sunny or cloudy with no rain or snow. For 24 hours the roads and fields were covered in fog. I had to take advantage of the milky faded horizons. I’m happy with the mix of photos that came out of the drive. I am hoping for another day soon. It has potential for a good series.

Santa Claus

It’s Christmas time again. Time for massive ad campaigns and things I don’t need. It does help me turn off the television set. It does not, however, sell me products. Especially when work is slow and the last thing I need is a new car.

It is also a time for Santa. I always take photos at some of the many Santa events for kids. I feel for the Santa more than anything. First words out of this guys mouth to me: “Are you married? Don’t do it or you’ll end up dressed like me.”

Tis the season.

Neuro-Linguistic Programming

I took a portrait of this cool dude named Robert Hafer. After a short while of photographing we got around to chatting. Robert teaches people how to be successful using NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming.) I am usually skeptical of such “self-help” psychology programs. This was no exception. After hearing a little from Robert, I started to understand that this wasn’t really a self-help program but rather an understanding of the ways words can be used to relate to life. We, as humans, take in senses in many ways. Obviously, there is no way to be conscious of all experiences at once. NLP, it appears, teaches you to recognize the way words play off experience and opens scenarios to use words for personal success through personal behavior. If more people stopped and consciously payed attention the ability to shape communication through words, human interactions would probably meet its potential.

I have to look more into NLP before truly placing it above the many self-help programs created or discovered primarily as a money makers. But it sounds convincing so far.

Copper Canyon Online

I am pleased to show off a new slide show of mine on the NY Times. What’s more exciting is I pitched the story and was able to land the gig.

Check it out here.

The trip was great. You should go.
