Mount Vesuvius is seen in the distance over Naples, Italy in June 2010. Nutrients delivered by volcanic eruptions to the agricultural land surrounding Mount Vesuvius have given the Campania region of Southern Italy contains some of the most fertile soil in all of Europe. Produce from the region has been prized the world over and has been a key ingredient and export for all Italian cooking. Unfortunately, the rise in illegal waste disposal of toxic chemicals by the Camorra and irresponsible garbage handling by the population has led to the destruction and poisoning of ground water causing serious health issues in the region.
